Tactical Tuesday: How To Reload Under Pressure

Don't train to reload because you think you've run out of ammo, train to reload when you recognize the stimulus of slide lock. Barret Kendrick shows you how...

In this week's Tactical Tuesday, special guest Barret Kendrick of Bearco Training teaches USCCA trainers Beth and Brandon a great reloading training drill to maximize speed and precision.

When training, it's important to focus on the reload process. Even though it's unlikely that you would need to reload during a self-defense encounter, you should still train for that exact scenario.

For this drill, you'll need a magazine with an unknown number of rounds in it. Either have a partner or instructor load your magazine with only 40%-60% of rounds, or load a few and mix them up so you don't know what you're working with.

The need to reload does need to be a surprise, which is why it's important that you don't know how many rounds you have. Brandon and Beth didn't know when to expect a reload - their only indication was that the slide had locked back.

In a self-defense incident, you won't always be able to anticipate the need to reload, which is why you need to train with a suspension of disbelief and put yourself in that context.

When training, always consult a professional instructor, and train hard, train safe, and train always.
